When Do You Need an External Battery Cabinet for a UPS?

A practical guide for UPS service companies and project buyers reviewing external battery cabinets for longer UPS backup time, battery replacement and server room projects.

When Do You Need an External Battery Cabinet for a UPS?
Many UPS systems are supplied with internal batteries for short backup time. This may be enough for safe shutdown or short power interruptions, but it is often not enough for projects that need 30 minutes, 1 hour or longer runtime.
In these cases, the project may need an external battery cabinet. External battery cabinets are commonly used for server rooms, IT rooms, network equipment backup, security systems, industrial control loads and long-runtime UPS projects.
This article explains when an external battery cabinet is needed, what information should be checked before selection, and how it relates to lead-acid battery replacement or lithium battery retrofit projects.

When an External Battery Cabinet Is Needed
An external battery cabinet is usually reviewed when the standard UPS battery runtime is not enough for the project.
Common situations include:
The customer needs 30 minutes, 1 hour or longer backup time.
The UPS internal battery only supports short runtime.
The project needs backup power for server racks, network equipment, CCTV, access control or IT room loads.
The existing UPS battery bank is aging and the customer wants to rebuild the battery system.
The customer wants a long-runtime UPS solution without replacing the UPS main unit.
The UPS is part of a small server room, small data center or infrastructure service project.
External battery cabinets are not selected only by cabinet size. The battery quantity, battery voltage, UPS DC bus requirement, charger current and expected runtime should be checked together.

Information to Confirm Before Selecting an External Battery Cabinet
Before selecting an external battery cabinet, the project should confirm the UPS and site information first. The cabinet is only one part of the battery system.
  1. UPS model and capacity
Confirm the UPS brand, model, rated capacity and whether it is a single phase or three phase UPS. The UPS capacity helps define the battery discharge current and runtime planning direction.
  1. UPS DC voltage
The external battery cabinet must match the UPS DC voltage requirement. This is one of the most important points in the whole project.
  1. Real load in kW
Runtime should be planned based on the real load, not only the UPS kVA rating. The same battery cabinet may provide different backup times under different load levels.
  1. Required backup time
Confirm whether the customer needs 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours or longer backup time. Longer runtime usually means more batteries, more cabinet space or a different battery solution.
  1. Battery type
Confirm whether the project will use lead-acid batteries or review lithium batteries. Lead-acid battery cabinets are common, while lithium battery systems may be reviewed for selected UPS projects with space or maintenance concerns.
  1. Installation space
Check the available floor space, cabinet height limit, door access, ventilation and service space. For small server rooms and IT rooms, installation space is often limited.
  1. Site condition
Temperature, ventilation, floor loading, cable route and maintenance access should be reviewed before final cabinet selection.

External Battery Cabinet and Lithium Battery System Options
For long-runtime UPS projects, external battery cabinets are usually planned with lead-acid batteries. This is still a common and practical solution for many UPS service projects.
However, some projects may also review lithium battery systems instead of traditional lead-acid battery cabinets.
Lead-acid external battery cabinet
A lead-acid external battery cabinet may be suitable when the project needs a familiar battery solution, the budget is controlled, and there is enough space for battery installation and future replacement.
It is commonly used for UPS expansion, UPS battery replacement and long-runtime backup power projects.
Lithium battery system for UPS
A UPS lithium battery system may be reviewed when the customer wants a smaller footprint, lower maintenance frequency, longer cycle life or a more compact long-runtime battery solution.
For ZYKEVO, lithium battery systems should be positioned as compatible UPS battery systems. They should not be described as home energy storage or grid-scale BESS products.
How to decide between them
The choice depends on the UPS DC voltage, real load, required backup time, available space, maintenance expectation and project budget.
If the site has enough space and the customer prefers a familiar replacement method, lead-acid external battery cabinets may still be suitable.
If the site has limited space or the customer wants to reduce battery maintenance work, a compatible UPS lithium battery system can be reviewed after the UPS compatibility check.

Common Mistakes When Planning External Battery Cabinets
Mistake 1: Selecting the cabinet before checking UPS DC voltage
The external battery cabinet must match the UPS DC voltage requirement. Cabinet size alone does not confirm compatibility.
Mistake 2: Planning runtime from battery quantity only
Backup time depends on real load, UPS efficiency, battery capacity, battery condition, temperature and discharge settings.
Mistake 3: Ignoring charger current
For long-runtime projects, the UPS charger current must be checked. A larger battery bank may need longer recharge time or a suitable charging configuration.
Mistake 4: Forgetting installation space
Battery cabinets need space for installation, ventilation, cable routing and maintenance. This should be checked before quotation.
Mistake 5: Treating lithium battery as a universal replacement
UPS lithium battery systems need compatibility review. The UPS DC voltage, charger behavior, BMS protection and communication requirements should be checked before selection.
How ZYKEVO Can Help
ZYKEVO can support UPS service companies, IT room service providers and backup power project partners with UPS selection, external battery cabinet matching, lead-acid battery replacement and compatible UPS lithium battery review.
For long-runtime UPS projects, ZYKEVO can help review the UPS capacity, DC voltage, real load, required backup time and possible battery configuration direction.
Send Your External Battery Cabinet Requirement
To discuss an external battery cabinet project, send the UPS model, UPS capacity, DC voltage, real load, required backup time, battery type preference and available installation space. ZYKEVO can help check whether an external battery cabinet or compatible UPS lithium battery system is more suitable.
